Exploring The Pros And Cons Of 3 Different Window Types

Ray Moreno

You've finally decided it's time to replace the windows in your home. You probably thought making the decision to go for it was the hard part. Unfortunately, now you are faced with the troubles of deciding what type of window you want to have installed. Learning more about the pros and cons of different types of windows can help make the decision for window replacements easier.

1. Awning Windows

Awning windows were designed to provide a home with both light and a nice breeze. This is a perfect window for a room that needs privacy, but occasionally wants to be opened to let some light in. Awning windows can be opened slightly, making it easy to ventilate a room.

The biggest issue with awning windows is the screens. The screens are located on the inside of the window, which means all of the dust, dirt, and bugs the screen catches that normally fall into the window sill is going to fall on your floor instead.

2. Casement Windows

You open casement windows outwards, which is great for fresh air, light, and a breeze from the side. This type of window is designed to have a tight seal, which is great for conserving energy. This is a window commonly put in hard to reach places, such as behind appliances or over sinks.

Casement windows are ideal because they are difficult to break into, but this is assuming the casement is not rusty or old. It is vital to check the casement of any older casement windows in your home to see if they need to be replaced or repaired.

3. Double Hung Windows

Double hung windows are a popular choice, because they have a unique appearance compared to standard and traditional windows. They are easy to use and great for homes with small children. You can open the window up at the top while keeping the bottom closed, which makes them perfect for letting fresh air in without having to worry about a child climbing out. Double hung windows are perfect for just about any room.

The downside to double hung windows is that they leak more air than just about any type of window. Some people actually consider only being able to open part of the window to be a downside as well.

When replacing windows in your home, only you can decide what type of window best suits your needs. Hopefully, understanding the pros and cons of these three types of windows can make choosing a little easier.
